The stamp collecting hobby and the March Party made it to TV this year.

“Applause,” the arts and culture program on WVIZ-TV/Ideastream Public Media in Cleveland, showcased the joys of philately during a 7-minute segment broadcast on April 11.

Jean-Marie Papoi, a digital producer for the station, spent much of the opening day of this year’s March Party at the show on March 14.

She said she found the hobby fascinating and the people she interviewed enjoyable to work with.

“I didn’t know there was so much to the hobby,” she said.

The segment shared a positive light on the hobby and the still widespread nature of collecting, refuting that it is a hobby for “old people.”

At the show Papoi interviewed GP president Howard Chapman, treasurer Ken Nilsestuen, member Jay Stotts, Civil War philately expert Trish Kaufmann and dealer Telah Smith.

The segment also explored how individuals started collecting, various postal history exhibits that were on display, how the hobby expands a person’s view of the world and how philately opens the door to exploring geography, history, the arts and more.
